Battlefield 3 gets two new trailers, release date, and open beta

EA announced the Battlelog service—while taking some shots at Activision—before E3. During the company's press conference, it dropped two other pieces of news: the game will be released on October 25 for the 360, PS3, and (most importantly) the PC, and there will be an open, multi-platform beta coming the first week or two of September.

Just in case you weren't excited enough, EA has also released two new videos of the game, showing the advanced features of the Frostbite 2.0 engine and a few moments of the multiplayer gameplay. Above and below.

One more interesting tidbit from the E3 fact sheet: "Players can express their individuality with their own dog tag that gets displayed to defeated enemies. Players choose a design with a dynamically tracked in-game stat that expresses their personality and play-style," the company stated. Neat!
The release date is good news, the open beta is better news, and the fact I'll be playing the game for myself tomorrow to get a feel for the game in action is the best news. EA may not be above taking some potshots at Activision, but it looks like the company has a game that can back up the smack talk.

Battlefield 3 Beta Release Date - Battlefield 3 Release Date - Battlefield 3 Trailer

The E3 2011 trailer for Battlefield 3 ,is taking shape four months before it ships out on October 25. That release date puts Battlefield 3 two weeks ahead of the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 release date. Fans have been in this situation before, as military FPS franchises like Medal of Honor and Brothers in Arms attempted to oust Infinity Ward's groundbreaking Call of Duty games. But it's DICE’s new entry in the Battlefield series that looks as if it'll be the first game to topple the mighty Activision IP.

As the direct sequel to the 2005 critically acclaimed Battlefield 2, BF3 allows Xbox 360 and PS3 to see action along with Windows PCs. The PC version's spec requirements call for a Vista operating system or later and Direct X 10 or 11. A version for Nintendo's Wii U system has been confirmed, but it's release date is obvious next year, pending the new system's launch.

Battlefield 3 promises to visit locations as diverse as New York and Sarajevo with a huge single-player campaign. A limited edition of the game will feature access to a DLC pack called "Back to Karkand" and additional weapons. PlayStation 3 owners will get bonus material in the form of the full game of Battlefield 1943 on the disc.

A Battlefield 3 beta begins September 6th (Date subject to change.) and will be an open beta across all platforms: Xbox 360, PS3 and the PC. Early access to the BF3 can be had with the invite that came with Medal of Honor limited edition last fall. Some would say that buying MoH isn't worth the early access, but MoH fans disagree.  Although it got a rough start, MoH is a great mix of what is good about BBC2 and WM2 and Black Ops.

E3 2011: Sony Apologizes For Hacks, Unveils PlayStation Vita

At this year’s big E3 video game convention in Los Angeles, Sony offered some new hardware and some apologies. NY1’s Adam Balkin filed the following report.

Aside from the monstrous creations on display in one first-person shooter, there was another giant beast at this year's Sony E3 press conference: the elephant in the room.
A recent hack on the company’s online PlayStation Network caused not only a huge outage, but may have compromised the account information for nearly 100 million users.

“You are the lifeblood of the company,” said Jack Tretton, CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment America, at a press conference. “Without you, there is no PlayStation, and I want to apologize both personally and on behalf of the company for any anxiety we’ve caused you.”
That aside, the big news from Sony was more information on its next generation handheld, the PlayStation Vita, which is the successor to the company’s PlayStation Portable or PSP system.
“The features alone are cutting edge: two analog sticks that give you Dual Shock-like control of games, a stunning multi-touch five-inch OLED screen, front and rear touch pads, six axis motion sensing technology, and, of course, my favorite feature, front and rear cameras allowing for augmented reality experiences never before seen, completely blurring the lines between reality and interactive entertainment,” said Kazuo Hirai, president and group CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment.
The PlayStation Vita will be out by the holidays and will cost about $250 for the WiFi-only version and about $300 for WiFi and 3G, with data plans available via ATT.

In an effort to extend the brand beyond just Sony hardware, the company also announced PlayStation Suite, which will allow some content to be available on certain Android phones and tablets.
Finally, in a push towards 3D console gaming hardware, Sony announced a 24-inch PlayStation-branded 3D television that, with a 3D game and some peripherals, will cost just about $500.
